Reiki is a form of energy healing that focuses on and manipulates ki.  Ki is another name for the “life force energy” that fills all living things; without ki there is no life.  Ki flows through energy channels much as blood flows through our circulatory system, and lymph flows through our lymphatic system. And like any system in our body, the energetic system can and does impact our whole body, as well as our mind and spirit.

If our “life force energy” is low, blocked, or stagnant, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress or pain. Luckily, Reiki can be used to promote healing and reduce pain as well as for stress reduction, relaxation.

The Usui System of Reiki practice is a technique for restoring the proper flow of ki in the body. It is administered by “laying on hands”, and heals by allowing the energy to flow through the affected parts of the body or its energy field, breaking apart stagnation and blockages caused by illness or negative memories, thoughts and feelings, and allowing the natural flow of energy to be restored.

We feel our best when we are in balance. We feel unwell when our blood is not circulating properly, and we get sick when our lymphatic system is not circulating lymph properly; similarly, when the flow of our life-force energy is disrupted, we feel unbalanced, or unwell. Blocked or stagnant ki can cause pain, weakness, or diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the body, and can cause or exacerbate emotional stress.

Just as we tense our bodies in fear or anger, we alter the flow of our life-force energy when we experience strong or chronic negative emotions. Whether tension comes from physical or emotional sources, it can disrupt the flow of ki. That disruption can have a negative impact on the way we feel, the way we perform, and the speed with which we recover from illness or injury.

How can Reiki help you?

Reiki can help relieve body aches and pain,  facilitate recovery from illness or injury, and provide lasting relief from emotional distress to improve overall quality of life.  Reiki can also be helpful with specific goals such as relief from back pain, improving concentration or sleep, releasing unwanted stress, eliminating old behavior patterns, or boosting well-being.  Reiki works in conjunction with medical  and physical therapy and is not a substitute for it.

What to Expect:

A Reiki Session can be scheduled for as little as 15 minutes or as long as a full hour.  Typical sessions take half an hour or an hour.   Your practitioner will assess your current condition and discuss your goals for the session before beginning the work.

Reiki is a subtle therapy. You will lie, fully clothed, on a massage table, while your practitioner holds her hands either a few inches away from your body, or rests her hands lightly on your body.  For a typical session, she will work from your head to your feet, adjusting the energies throughout your whole body; but it is equally possible to have a session in which your practitioner focuses on a specific area for a full 15 minute session. You may feel heat, cold, tingling, or nothing at all during the session; but you will feel a sense of ease and lessening of pain at the end of the session.

Sometimes, when a session releases tension in one area, your body may shift so that you feel a new ache or pain.  This typically happens when you have been holding tension without being aware of it, and the more obvious pain is released.

Because we hold both physical and emotional tension in our bodies, you may experience strong emotions during your Reiki session.  This is normal.  Simply tell your Reiki Therapist what you’re feeling, and she will adapt the session to allow you to feel it, and to release the strong emotion.  A strong emotional release is often followed by a physical muscular tension release, and you will feel relaxed and at ease, instead of drained.

A Reiki session leaves you with a wonderful feeling of relaxation and peace. The changes you experience are only beginning during the session, and things may keep moving and shifting subtly for the next 24 hours.
